DGNB Districts
The system for developing entire districts. It evaluates outdoor facilities, infrastructure, and concepts that apply across individual properties.

Classification
An assessment system for sustainable neighborhoods with a focus on climate protection, climate adaptation, and resilience. It examines the carbon footprint throughout planning, construction, and use, the urban and microclimate, the reduction of environmental risks, as well as biodiversity, mobility, and circular economy approaches.
Individual aspects of future buildings are included in the assessment, such as green roofs or the share of photovoltaics. However, the focus is on the outdoor facilities, infrastructure, and cross-neighborhood concepts.
The value here lies less in the object itself and more in what your space says about you as an employer.

When a different system is a better fit
The neighborhood system evaluates the area, not the individual buildings within it. Interior topics such as thermal and visual comfort are not covered. If you want to have an individual building evaluated, you should use building-specific systems instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the effort comparable to building certification?
No, it is significantly larger. Additional studies, such as microclimate analyses and biodiversity concepts, are required, and the measures derived from them can lead to substantial planning and construction costs. However, some of these topics are already covered by regulatory approval requirements.
Does district certification make subsequent building certification on one of the plots easier?
Partially. District-level requirements influence building construction, such as degrees of soil sealing, types of vegetation, or mandatory shares of renewable energy. A variety of interior-related topics remain unaddressed in district certification and must be handled separately during the building certification process.
Do we have to complete Phase III if the building construction is delayed?
The DGNB encourages and recommends completion, but cannot contractually mandate it. The validity of the Phase II certificate can be extended in consultation with the DGNB.
